Record used van sales in December 2009 due to VAT and commercial vehicle tax break changes

Anchor Vans, one of the UK's leading used van vendors, has reported record sales of used commercial vehicles in November and December 2009. Used van prices have been steadily rising over 2009, yet used commercial vehicles bought before the end of January 2010 benefit from both the current lower VAT rate and 100% tax relief on all commercial vehicle purchases. Simon Joyce, Sales Director of Anchor Vans, explains that used van buyers are purchasing the vehicles now before the VAT rate returns to previous levels and the tax relief on commercial vehicles ends in the New Year.

"We've sold an incredible number of used vans just in the last couple of weeks, and practically all of the buyers we've sold to have commented on the VAT rate changes and the end of the commercial vehicle tax relief in the New Year," commented Simon. "It's made a big difference to the businesses that need to buy commercial vehicles, and so making that purchase before the end of the year has been good business sense. It's not rocket science to realise that purchasing a used van in December meant that it was 2.5% cheaper than in January."

"It's been a tough year for many businesses, and the government policy of 100% tax relief and lower VAT has been very welcome. Commercial vehicles are critical to the livelihoods of a great number of people, and we're seeing a lot of them making the best use of these favourable van buying conditions whilst they can." Simon added; "There will also be a price increase in March as the manufacturers introduce their new models, so there really has never been a better time to buy a used van than now."
