The first quarter of 2016 has ended on a high for the new commercial vehicle market, with nearly 99,000 vehicles registered, a 1.2% increase on the same quarter of 2015.
Official figures from the SMMT (Society of Motor Manufacturers & Traders), show that light commercials demand has risen 3.3% in March with a total of 63,913 new registrations.
A busy month due to the new 16 plate release, March represents more than two thirds of the total registrations for the first quarter of 2016. The demand for larger vehicles continues to drive growth, with the 2.5-3.5 tonne market up by 14.2% on last year.
Mike Hawes, SMMT Chief Executive: “Traditionally one of the busiest months of the year for the new British van market, March’s new 16 plate gave a welcome boost, closing the first quarter on a positive note after a more subdued start to the year. Following the sector’s record performance set in 2015, we expect to see steadier growth over the coming months.”
