A SWAT van showcasing iconic artwork by the elusive graffiti artist Banksy has sold at auction for £218,000.
The artwork, created in 2006, and in true Banksy anti-establishment style, shows a group of armed officers about to be outsmarted by a boy on one side with Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz on the other.
Prior to auction the van has only been seen in public once at Banksy’s debut solo exhibition in LA in 2006, an event which despite little advertising, attracted hordes including Hollywood A-listers Angelina Jolie, Jude Law and Brad Pitt.
Speaking of the unique piece of artwork, Ralph Taylor, a senior director at Bonhams’ said “All of Banksy is on show here: his bravado, his imagination, his technical prowess, his confidence and his willingness to put his head above the parapet and use truth as a weapon.”
“His characteristic stencilling technique was inspired by an incident in which the artist was hiding from the police under a rubbish lorry, he noticed the stencilled serial number.”
“Stencilling has since allowed him to carry out complicated graffiti pieces extremely quickly, before he melts away into the night.”
Having risen to international fame, artwork by the UK based street artist regularly attracts six figures at auction.
